1KD vs 2KD: Which Hilux Engine Should You Buy in 2025?
The two engines that built Kenya's taxi and 4x4 fleet side by side. Here is how the 1KD-FTV and 2KD-FTV compare on price, torque, oil consumption and parts availability.

Every parts counter in Nairobi has a version of this argument: 1KD or 2KD? You have heard it in taxi queues, at Mombasa Road garages and in WhatsApp groups. Both are 2.5-litre four-cylinder common-rail diesels, both are bulletproof in the hands of a sensible owner, and both are available here as ex-Japan complete engines. But they are not the same engine.
Power and character
The 2KD-FTV makes 174 hp and 343 Nm, while the 1KD-FTV makes 136 hp and 343 Nm. Same torque, more power — the 2KD revs 700 rpm higher and feels noticeably stronger once the turbo spools past 2,500 rpm. If your vehicle is loaded regularly — a Hilux with a 1.5-tonne payload, or a Prado with a rooftop tent — the 2KD pulls cleaner at 90–110 km/h on the coastal road.
The 1KD, by contrast, is the sleeper. Its lower boost pressure means the turbo is under less stress, which is exactly why we see so many 1KD turbos still original at 400,000 km.
Oil consumption
This is where owners split. A well-maintained 2KD drinks 0.3 to 0.5 litres per 1,000 km after 150,000 km — normal. The 1KD typically consumes 20–30% less in the same conditions. If you are running a commercial taxi and budgeting for oil, that difference adds up to KES 40,000–60,000 a year.
Parts availability and price
Everything for both engines sits on our shelves today. The 1KD turbocharger (Mitsubishi M458T) is the cheapest to remanufacture in the country, and injector sets for the 1KD are widely available. The 2KD has the advantage of stronger head gasket options — the three-layer gasket set is now standard on our bench.
Verdict
- Choose the 2KD if you need the extra horsepower and you will do disciplined 5,000 km oil changes.
- Choose the 1KD if your priority is lowest running cost and the mildest turbo duty cycle in the Hilux family.
- Buying an engine unit? Ask for the Japanese mileage document — we attach a photo of the scrap certificate to every engine we list.
