Subaru Forester Owners: The Parts You Should Always Keep in Stock

The Forester is one of the most loyal vehicles in Kenya: it holds value, it handles our roads, and the boxer engine is a pleasure. But Subaru parts are pricier and less available locally than Toyota or Nissan — so the smart owner plans.

The ten-pet problem list

  • Radiator — the SK's bottom tank cracks at roughly 8 years. A full radiator-and-fan assembly is KES 16,800 today.
  • Timing chain tensioner — the classic cold-start rattle. Replace at 100,000 km, not when you hear it.
  • CV joints — inner joints fail around 120,000 km on our washboard roads.
  • Water pump — plastic impellers on the EJ25 do not like overheating.
  • O2 sensors — the pre-cat sensor wants replacing every 60,000 km on Kenyan fuel.
  • Suspension bushings — front lower arm bushings are the source of 90% of Forester clunks.
  • Alternator — the 100A units are common and affordable when replaced early.
  • Headlights — the SK's polycarbonate lenses yellow fast under our sun.
  • A/C compressor — when it goes, it goes suddenly. Keep the part number.
  • Engine mounts — hydraulic, and they leak. A set costs less than the vibration it cures.

Why boxer owners should buy early

Subaru components have a longer lead time than Toyota or Nissan — often 2–3 weeks from Japan. Buying a radiator or water pump 'on schedule' instead of 'after the breakdown' is the difference between a two-hour job and a four-day workshop stay.
